On January 26, 2022, the Cameroon Women Peace Movement (CAWOPEM) convened an Intergenerational Communal Dialogue in the South West Region of Cameroon. This impactful activity was part of the project titled: “Promoting a Culture of Peace for Women and Children through Acts of Transformation from Communal Violent Extremist Acts via Peace and Human Rights Education in Conflict-Affected Regions in Cameroon.”
The event united diverse participants, including grassroots women, religious leaders, educators, local administrators, and members of various age groups. Together, they explored ways to foster peace and communal coexistence in their communities.
Aims and Objectives
The Intergenerational Communal Dialogue was designed to:
- Map out endogenous strategies for peacebuilding in local communities.
- Share knowledge and practices that can inform inclusive, community-based peace processes.
- Provide insights to partners for developing practical peacebuilding manuals and handbooks.
As highlighted during the event, indigenous and endogenous peace processes hold invaluable insights for rebuilding social trust and restoring communal harmony.
Knowledge Sharing Across Generations and Communities
Participants engaged in interactive exchanges, sharing traditional peacebuilding methods and conflict resolution practices unique to their communities. These participatory sessions allowed for the transfer of knowledge between generations, fostering a deeper understanding of how cultural practices can contribute to long-lasting peace.
One participant noted, “Our indigenous strategies for conflict resolution have worked for generations. By documenting these methods, we preserve our cultural heritage while promoting unity and healing.”
Future Impact
The insights gathered during the dialogue will be used to produce peacebuilding manuals and handbooks, ensuring that these community-driven strategies are preserved and shared with peace practitioners and policymakers.
This initiative was made possible through the generous support of the Canadian High Commission in Cameroon.
Conclusion
The Intergenerational Communal Dialogue hosted by CAWOPEM is a testament to the power of inclusive and culturally rooted approaches to peacebuilding. By bringing together diverse voices and experiences, this initiative is paving the way for more sustainable and community-led solutions to conflict in Cameroon.
With the support of partners like the Canadian High Commission, CAWOPEM continues to promote a culture of peace and empower communities to take ownership of their futures.
